Churchplanters.com conference- Shawn Lovejoy

Hey,

Sorry about not blogging in a while, I have made family and church and work and school come first so I have had to put blogging on the backburner.

So without further ado, I am back by request…..thanks Jonathan :)

The first speaker at the churchplanters.com conference is Shawn Lovejoy and here is his notes:

Leading in Uncertain Financial Times

  • financial factors have caused 7 church plants in the area to close in last 18 months
  • Proverbs 22:3 & 27:12 “A prudent person foresees the danger ahead and takes precautions, the simpleton goes blindly on and suffers the consequences.”
  • God is looking for prudent leaders.
  • Seminary is not teaching wise financial management.
  • faith and money are  not found together anywhere in the bible, but almost everytime money is mentioned so is stewardship, diligence, prudence, and wisdom.
  • Prudent leaders balance faith with wisdom.
  • faith is flesh baptized a lot of times.
  • Luke 14:28-30 :”Suppose one of you wants to build a tower. Will he not first sit down and estimate the cost to see if he has enough money to complete it? For if he lays the foundation and is not able to finish it, everyone who sees it will ridicule him, saying, ‘This fellow began to build and was not able to finish.’
  • we are fools if we start something without a plan to pay for it.
  • Faith is not presuming on the blessing of God.  It’s trusting in the sovereignty of God.
  • Faith is easier than wisdom the way we operate.
  • Prudent people have people in the church who know the area.
  • Proverbs 12:15 The way of a fool seems right to him,
but a wise man listens to advice.
  • need to have 6-8 weeks tithes in the bank
  • Proverbs 21:20 In the house of the wise are stores of choice food and oil,
but a foolish man devours all he has.

Be back soon…..Peace Out…

Couple of Quick Things…

Dad came out of surgery.  All I know right now is that the tumor was cancerous, but they think they have gotten all of it.  He has to go back to the doctor on Tuesday and we will find out more.  They said the surgery may be all, but there is a chance they may have to do more treatments, so please continue to pray.

Also, I thought I would leave you guys with a few holiday pics from around the house:

1 Word That Can Change Your Christmas (Part 5)…

Yesterday we look at two practical ways to worship Jesus this holiday season….Today I want us to look at two more as we finish up this series:

3. You worship God through service.  Are you serving God this holiday season?  Sometimes when we are in a relationship it has a tendency to become all about us.  Think about it.  Over time we can allow relationship to become all about our wants and needs.  Do you expect God to fulfill all your needs?  I think we allow that to become our problem.  Instead of asking what we can do for God, we have perverted the relationship to what God can do for us.  So what if this holiday season you ask what you can do for God.  Maybe you can volunteer down at the soup kitchen.  Maybe you can do something kind for a stranger.  Maybe you can serve by working in the kids area.  Maybe you can serve God by focusing on the many needs in our community and maybe, just maybe, by fulfilling God’s needs, your needs might be  met.

4. You worship God when times are tough.  Can you worship God, even if this holiday season is tough for you?  Gene Appel is a fairly popular pastor.  Gene is the pastor of a church in California, but before that he was the pastor of a very successful church in Las Vegas.  That church at the time was a young church and on a Sunday night they had a building dedication.  That night when Gene got home his wife informed him she was leaving him for someone at her work.  To make a long story short all attempts to restore the marriage failed.  The leaders of the church asked gene to continue as pastor so they could help see him through.  Now during his first christmas after the separation they held a candlelight Christmas Eve service.  Gene’s thoughts were to get through the service, do some laundry, pack, and get up early fly to the midwest where he had family waiting on him.  Through the busyness of the day Gene hadn’t eaten.  After the service Gene decided to grab a bite to eat, but everything was closed.  As he drives around looking for a place to eat it starts to set in.  Everyone else is celebrating, but he is becoming depressed.  Finally Gene finds a Country and Western style casino with a 50’s style diner that is open.  Gene walks into the diner and sits at a table for four and that is when the irony hits him….an hour ago he is standing with 2000 people and now he is in a c & w casino all by myself and to add insult to injury on the jukebox comes Elvis Pressley’s “Are You Lonesome Tonight?”.  Gene said he had to laugh to keep from crying because of the loneliness that had set in a way we can not understand……or maybe you can…..I mean he had people who loved him, but where were they?  He knew he had a family waiting, but his heart ached.  So what did Gene do?  Just what he said.  He got up walked through the casino, drove home, did some laundry and packed.  He went to his empty bedroom to his empty bed crawled in and you know what he did…he sang himself to sleep.  He worshipped God.  You know what he sang?  “Jesus Loves me this i know, for the Bible tells me so, little ones to him belong they are weak, but he is strong.”  In his lowest of lows he worshipped God…in our lowest of lows we NEED to worship God.  We need to worship the Christ.

These are four practical ways we can WORSHIP Christ this holiday season.  Can you imagine if each of us focuses on one of these ways to worship Jesus this holiday season.  We could start a radical transformation of what Christmas means.  Imagine how that could impact Spartanburg.

Maybe instead of people fighting the crowds to buy clothes and toys, people will fight the crowds to worship the One True God like Simeon.

Maybe instead of seeing how much I can get for myself, I can see how much I can give to help those less fortunate.

Maybe instead of asking what God will Do for me this holiday season I will see what I can do for God.

Maybe instead of saying pity me this holiday season we can say Praise God!

I hope you got something out of this…and remember

Peace Out…

1 Word That Can Change Your Christmas (Part 4)…

Yesterday we looked at a story in God’s Word, now today I want to reveal to you the one word that can change your Christmas:

The one word that can change your life can be found at the end of verse 28 in Luke chapter 2.  At the end of the verse we see Simeon holding the baby and he praised God.  The greek word for praise is Eulogeo, which means to speak  well of or to celebrate with praises and in this context only refers to God.  In other words, Simeon took hold of the baby Jesus and WORSHIPPED God!

Worship.  What if we truly worshipped this holiday season?  What if instead of fighting our way through the hustle and bustle of life to get to that sweater that is on sale or those new shoes we will wear only once or twice, we instead were like Simeon and fought through the hustle and bustle to stop and worship God.  Seriously, do we worship God in this holiday season or do we worship stuff?

How can you worship Christ in this holiday season?  Romans 12:1 says “Therefore, I urge you, brothers, in view of God’s mercy, to offer your bodies as living sacrifices, holy and pleasing to God—this is your spiritual act of worship.”  We worship God with our lives.  The way we live from day to day is how we worship God.  You see, you don’t just worship God when you come to church on Sunday.  You don’t just worship God when you are singing or listening to worship music.  You worship God with your life and I want us to look at four ways that we can worship Christ this Christmas Season.

1. You worship God with your time.  What do you hold valuable this season?  This is one I struggle with.  I am blessed to work for Hub City, but with that comes some responsibilities that are hard.  Since we do not have offices right now most of my work is done at home….with a two year old.  Now since she is home with me I have to watch her while I am getting work done.  That is not the tough part. The tough part is getting all my work done before my wife gets home.  Now when she walks through the door I have two options: 1. I can wait to Melanie gets home and let her watch Alyx and then work or 2. I can push through the day and when Melanie walks in shut the computer off and spend time with her.  I used to choose number 1, but not anymore….Now I push through the day and shut it down when she walks through the door.  If I choose option 1, I tell Melanie that work is more important than her.  I was cheating her, but I wonder how many of us are doing the same thing with God?  How are you cheating God?  What has become more important to you than God?  Do you rob time in your relationship?  If you are not spending time with God you are killing your relationship with Him, just like if I don’t spend time with my wife I am killing my relationship.  Maybe some of you need to shut the computer down or the tv off….I am just saying.

2. You worship God with Giving.  Every guy has that ugly tie we didn’t want.  Every girl has that dress they do no intend on wearing.  What if instead of buying that gift card as a last second gift, what if we used that money to help those less fortunate?  What if instead of getting a gift we didn’t need, we gave the gift to life to those who will die this year because they do not have clean water.  What if you made a commitment today to instead of spending money on the gift certificate or that ugly tie we used that money to help those who are less fortunate right around you.  There are so many people right around here that need help just so that they can get there kids a gift for Christmas.  What if you and some friends got together and sponsored a family?  What if instead of putting a fake smile on someone’s face you put a real one?

Tomorrow, the last two practical ways we can worship God this holiday season….Until then..

Peace Out…

1 Word That Can Change Your Christmas (Part 3)…

The last two days we looked at what Christmas means to us, today is going to be different.  Let’s see what God’s Word says:

We are going to look at a story today.  The single word that could change your Christmas is found in this story in Luke 2, but you need some background.

This is a story some of you might be familiar with, others of you have totally overlooked this story before.  Most of us have never heard this story told at Christmas, but today I hope you can listen and hear what God is saying.  So the background to this story is Jesus has been born and is a few days old and his parents are going to take him to the temple to be dedicated.  Now according to the Jewish Law(which can be found in Leviticus…a book in the Old Testament), the mother is unclean for a week after the baby is born, then on the eighth day the boy would be circumcised.  The mother would then wait 33 days to go to be purified.  During this time she could not go to the temple.  This story takes place as she is going to the temple, so we know Jesus is around 40 days old and this is where our story starts:

Luke 2:22-24 “When the time of their purification according to the Law of Moses had been completed, Joseph and Mary took him to Jerusalem to present him to the Lord (as it is written in the Law of the Lord, “Every firstborn male is to be consecrated to the Lord”), and to offer a sacrifice in keeping with what is said in the Law of the Lord: “a pair of doves or two young pigeons.”

Now I want us really look at that last phrase….a pair of doves or two young pigeons.  Now according to custom, after a birth the family would have to bring a year old lamb and a dove or a pigeon.  Now the only way for Joseph and Mary to be able to bring two doves or pigeons was if they were poor.  The Law stipulated if they could not afford a lamb then they could substitute another dove or pigeon.  So since we see in this story they used two doves or pigeons, we know they were poor.  Now for some of us we feel God can not relate to us.  God is a King and Kings are not poor, right?  But Jesus came in a lowly manner to a poor family.  He knew what it was like to have to do without.  He knew what it was like to be hungry.  He knew what it was like to have a bad Christmas.

Maybe this is why Jesus was so adamant about helping those that were less fortunate, because he was those that were less fortunate.  In Matthew Jesus says when you help the least of these you are helping him….maybe he understood what it felt like to be them.  Can you relate to this?  Do you feel something is wrong if you are not helping others?  Just a thought.

Lets continue:

Luke 2:25-28 “Now there was a man in Jerusalem called Simeon, who was righteous and devout.  He was waiting for the consolation of Israel, and the Holy Spirit was upon him.  It had been revealed to him by the Holy Spirit that he would not die before he had seen the Lord’s Christ.  Moved by the Spirit, he went to the temple courts.  When the parents brought in the child Jesus to do for him what the custom of the Law required, Simeon took him in his arms and praised God, saying:

Now lets stop for a minute and look at this.  Simeon was righteous and devout.  The Holy Spirit told him he would see the Christ, so moved by the Spirit he went to the temple courts.  Now typically the temple courts were crowded and I am sure there was more than one baby there.  Now two things I find interesting.  I am pretty sure Simeon did not know Joseph and Mary from Adam and Eve, but he obediently found them in a crowd of people and I bet that had to be interesting.  Can you see an old man in a crowded area checking things out?  I mean seriously, I wonder how many people went up to him to try to help him, but got told he was fine.  Do you think he got a lot a of strange looks?  People had to wonder who strange guy wandering around was?  Then in walk Mary and Joseph and he eyes them from across the temple court, so he fights through the crowd to get them.  Mary and Joseph look up to see this man coming at them and try to get out of the way, and then he stops and stares at the baby….then them….then the baby and he exclaims “He’s the one”, which is followed by a can I hold your baby?  Now what were Mary and Joseph thinking?  Hold my baby?  How about you got 2 seconds to get away from my baby!  But they let him hold the baby.  The baby that Angels told you would be the Messiah.  The baby that was to save the nations.  The baby that was God.  And listen to what he says when they give him the baby:

Luke 2:29-32 “Sovereign Lord, as you have promised, you now dismiss your servant in peace.  For my eyes have seen your salvation, which you have prepared in the sight of all people, a light for revelation to the Gentiles and for glory to your people Israel.”

Simeon confirmed to them that Jesus was the Messiah.  Simeon reminded them of what he was sent to the world to do.  WoW.  Could you imagine how powerful this moment had to be to Joseph and Mary.  But check this…..Simeon was ready to die.  He saw what God had promised him he would see and he was ready to die.  Simeon had the opportunity to do the one word that could change your Christmas from this point forward and was ready to die.

Now before I reveal to you that one word, I want to tell you the rest of this story:  After giving the baby back Simeon blessed Mary and Joseph and told the that Jesus would cause the fall and rising of many in Israel and he would be spoken against and that they would be grieven also.  Another prophetess who stayed at the temple day and night heard this and  gave thanks to God and told others about the child.  After the purification ceremony Joseph and Mary left to go home.

But now the one word.  Are you ready for it?  Tomorrow…until then Peace Out…

1 Word That Can Change Your Christmas (Part 2)…

Yesterday we talked about what Christmas meant to me growing up…..today I want us to reflect on what Christmas might have meant to some of you:

Does Christmas mean getting up early the day after Thanksgiving and shopping ALL day?  For some of you that is what you were looking forward to the most this holiday season…..you did all your shopping this past Friday.

Or Maybe Christmas means making cookies or other treats with family as we laugh with one another.

Maybe Christmas sucked for you.  Maybe when you think about Christmas it brings back bad memories.  Maybe You wanted something you didn’t get.

Or maybe you had a parent that was sick or even died during the holiday season and this time of year brings back all those memories.

When I look back at Christmas past I see how I have screwed up the meaning of Christmas.  Christmas was all about me and my presents.  Me and what Jesus had done for ME.  I mean it was all about me….it should have just been named memas.  But now, as I look ahead to Christmas Future, I look at the future with my own child and I have to ask myself do I want to make Christmas about her?  About her gifts, about her family, about her….I don’t think anyone intentionally made Christmas about me in the past, but the sensationalism that is brought on by the media has taught us as consumers that it is about us.  We need the newest, fastest, coolest newest gadget/toy/clothing item/playstation/ipod, and if we don’t have it then we are truly missing out.  Unfortunately this is the reason 450 billion dollars is spent every year at Christmas.  Every year.  So, as Christmas Future comes closer and closer we are going to look at a single word that could change your Christmas Present, as well as your Christmas Future.

But that is tomorrow, until then…Peace Out….

1 Word That Can Change Your Christmas (Part 1)….

I wanted to share with you the information I shared at Church today.  It will take Monday-Friday…some posts will be longer than others, but I hope to hear your thoughts…If you would like to listen to the whole message at once you can click here:

As we enter the Christmas season, I cant help but recall Christmas Past and Christmas Future.  When I think about Christmas past I can remember my grandmother coming over and even sometimes my Uncle and Aunt.  We would get together on Christmas Eve and eat snacks and hang out with one another.  I can remember the love that filled the room as we would laugh and cut up.  I think of the presents under the tree and how they seemed to grow on a daily basis, then when the relatives came, even more presents.  My sister and I would always count to see who had the most presents, like the one with the most was loved more or something.  Then, as the night wore on I remember having to go to bed so Santa Claus would come.  We would watch the news that night and watch the “Santa Tracker”, you know where the weather man tracked where Santa’s sleigh was.  I remember lying in bed and wondering if Santa had come.  I can remember not being able to sleep, and honestly, I still can’t.  I still lie awake in bed on Christmas eve, just praying I will get a measly couple of hours of sleep.  I mean seriously, I have been a good boy this year and if Santa doesn’t come I am going to be ticked…..seriously.  But I would lie in bed wondering what Santa was going to bring me.  What was I going to get for Christmas.  I would then get up around 6 or so and wake everyone up.  Mom, Dad, my sister, MeMa, Uncle Johnny and Robin.  We would all go to the living room and tear into some presents.  Have you ever been so excited on Christmas morning that you were literally shaking when you opened presents?  Okay, I am still like that I get giddy.  Dad is always telling, “Son, quit being so nervous” like a big snake is going to jump out and get me or something….but really it was what I wanted.  After that, breakfast, while Mom made a big Christmas lunch.  Turkey, Ham, Potatoes, Green Beans, Corn, Biscuits, and that is just for Starters.  Now, that was what Christmas was all about-presents, food, and family….. and I am willing to bet if I asked some of you here that was what your christmas was all about as well.

Is that what Christmas means?

Until tomorrow, Peace Out…

Another Day, Another Dollar….

I really have some cool and important stuff to say, but I am sharing it Sunday and so it will have to wait til next week.  I have just been thinking about what the Holiday season has become.  I mean seriously, it is fast approaching.  Credit cards, debt, traffic, overcrowded stores.  Sometimes I can be a bah humbug.  This week we are starting a new series called Advent Conspiracy.  The whole point of this series is four words that can change your Christmas.  I am really excited about this series.  Check out this video and I will be talking to you soon.

Baptism…

Hey, this past Sunday we had an awesome service.  Afterwards, we all went to Arcadia Baptist to celebrate with a Grill and Chill…In other words, we ate and hung out together.  It was our first fellowship at Hub City and it was awesome.  When the Grill and Chill was over we had our first Baptism….WHICH WAS AMAZING….including my socks that everyone seemed to enjoy…..still not sure why.  Not only was it Hub City’s first baptism, but it was also the first time I had the honor to baptize someone.  I had the privilege to baptize Mark McClure.  Mark is a good guy who rededicated his life to God and wanted to follow through with Baptism.  I just wanted to share that with you guys today.

I also had something else I wanted to share, but I have decided to include that in my message on Sunday the 30th.  I hope you can come, but if not I will also post it on the blog shortly thereafter.

Peace Out…grill-and-chill-with-baptisim-016

Pictures From The Campsite….

Here are some pictures I took the past couple of days at the campsite.  Monday we had like 50 mallards hanging around our site.  And as usual Alyx is being a stinker :)

Peace Out…
